Win Two Tickets to the Ultimate Grilled Cheese Event

April 15, 2016

Congrats to #33, Allie!

If you like grilled cheese, you’ll love one of my favorite food events: The Big Cheesy.

Held next weekend, The Big Cheesy features grilled cheese from 5 different shops, with guests voting for their favorite grilled cheese. Featured shops include Artisanal (the reigning champ), Campbell Cheese & Grocery and Depanneur (both artisanal grocers from Williamsburg, Brooklyn), salumeria Ends Meat, and rustic sandwich shop The Wheelhouse. You’ll wash the grilled cheese down with 32 oz of beer, thanks to Goose Island.

The Big Cheesy is April 23 + 24 at Openhouse on Mulberry and Kenmare. Tickets are $30 and you’ll get one hour to sample the grilled cheese, so pick your time slot wisely (11am – 7pm) and make sure to show up hungry.

And, we’re giving one lucky winner a pair of tickets. To win, comment on this post with your favorite grilled cheese sandwich (homemade or from a restaurant!) by 11:59pm Monday night (4/18). Note I have to approve comments, so it may not appear immediately. Good luck!

My favorite is one we make at home. Thick Texas toast buttered on both sides, a healthy dose of sharp cheddar, some bacon, and half an avocado for good measure.

Classic – American, with bacon and tomato on white toasted bread, or for a kick, add avocado and hot sauce!

I just moved to NYC from Chicago but my favorite grilled cheese is from Cheesie’s Pub and Grill. Nothing tastes better than grilled cheese on buttered garlic texas toast at 2am!

Love, love, love gooey grilled cheese sandwiches! Love NY for having events like these 🙂 My favorite grilled cheese in NY is the one from Melt Shop in Midtown West! I like either the classic grilled cheese or a loaded grilled cheese like the Maple Bacon, but you can’t go wrong with either!

Cheese grille in the Lower east side is awesome! All of their sandwiches taste amazing but my fave goes out to crispy goat. You really can’t go wrong with bacon.

I recently went to a restaurant called Little Poland around 12th st. I was in the mood for a grill cheese the whole day and sure enough they had it. It was great! Toasted Grill Cheese and Ham Sandwich.. Grill cheese sandwich, one of life’s simple pleasure! I am getting hungry just thinking about it.

My favorite grilled cheese is my own. Simple cheddar cheese on sourdough bread–with tomato soup. Paradise!

So hard to pick a favorite. Maybe grilled gruyere on a hearty multigrain bread.

  • Reply Sarah Packard April 16, 2016 at 5:27 pm

My fave grilled cheese has to be some kind of multigrain bread (I hate white bread!) with the sharpest possible cheese, ideally a reeeeally sharp cheddar. 🙂 I do also love gruyere, though! And plenty of butter on the bread! Lenwich (formerly Lenny’s) makes a great, greasy grilled cheese.

I say cheese for grilled cheese. There’s not a grilled cheese I don’t like. I love the grilled cheese from the snow truck because it’s also for a good cause. I also ate free grilled cheese and tomato soup from cheese grille on grilled cheese day. That’s a perfect combo. There was a band and a huge cheese smiley character. And that makes everything taste better!

One of my favorite grilled cheese sandwiches is Boar’s Head Vermont Cheddar, Provolone, and Sharp Cheddar with Spinach. Yumm!

  • Reply Rob Tucker April 18, 2016 at 12:22 pm

My favorite? Homemade. In a frying pan, take two thick slices of sourdough bread. Apply softened butter to one side of each slice and lightly brown butter-side down in greased (melted butter) frying pan . When lightly brown, flip both slices.. Smear on one golden brown side with Dijon mustard. On other golden brown side, smear lightly with anchovy paste. Lay 3 thick slices of assorted hard and/or semi-soft cheese. Top with 3 very thin slices of tomato. Add a few turns of ground pepper and a dash of oregano. Bring sandwich together and flip occasionally until golden brown and cheese is melted. Enjoy.

I love keeping it simple with some homemade grilled cheese: Sourdough bread, smoked gouda and thinly sliced green apples.

One time my boyfriend and I made a grilled cheese tower with grilled onions, tomatoes, 4 types of cheese and the most delicious crusty, crunchy bread. We had just started going out and it pretty much solidified our love!

  • Reply Colleen April 18, 2016 at 3:03 pm

My favorite? Homemade with sourdough bread and three kinds of cheese. The trick is also to slather the sides of the bread with mayo for it to be perfectly toasted.

brisket grilled cheese on texas toast! yum.

  • Reply Rachel R April 18, 2016 at 5:25 pm

I’m not sure there is a bad grilled cheese? My favorite would have to be brioche with Gruyere and bacon.

  • Reply Liz April 18, 2016 at 10:25 pm

My favorite is a vegan version of it with Dayia cheese slices, tomato and basil! Homemade <3
