3 Tools to Help You Drink More Water

March 8, 2017

“Drink more water.” That seems to be the solution for everything. Want to lose weight? Drink more water. Want clearer skin? Drink more water.  If you are trying to stay hydrated, here are three tools to help you achieve your goals.

And yes, I’ve tried a ton of tricks to increase my water intake – I’ve even made it a New Year’s resolution before!

How to Drink More Water If You Like Your Water Cold

I absolutely love cold water. Hand me a water bottle out of the fridge, I’m likely to chug it. One with room temp water? Eh.

Last year, stainless steel water bottles, like the ones from S’well, started popping up everywhere in my office. I knew the backstory – they were insulated, vacuum sealed, kept drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12. But I had dozens of water bottles at home. Why would I need something new?

A vendor came into my office and handed out branded versions of these bottles and I was hooked. As someone who loves cold water, I could enjoy a cold, refreshing sip by my bed in the middle of the night. I could throw the bottle in my purse, without worrying about condensation. Cold, out of the fridge water, was always now available to me on the go.

If you like your water cold, I highly recommend an insulated stainless steel water bottle. There are dozens of them available at different price points on Amazon. I can’t comment on the brand I have since it was from a swag bag, so I’d encourage you to check out the reviews!

How to Drink More Water If You are High-Tech

Sometimes you need something to keep you honest. That’s where Hidrate Spark comes in. Hidrate Spark is a smart water bottle that connects to your phone via Bluetooth. It can also sync with any fitness tracker.

The Hidrate Spark app will set a target water goal for you, based on your activity level and location, but this goal alters daily depending on temperature, humidity, and activity level, using data from your fitness tracker or phone.

I had a fitness tracker years ago, and always found that it had trouble synching with my phone. That’s not the case with Hidrate Spark. Moments after drinking from the water bottle, if I open the app, I can see it synching to my phone with it updating how much I drank and how many ounces I have to go to hit my goal. Unlike other devices that send reminders solely through phone notifications, this bottle glows as a reminder for you to drink water. If you have friends with a Hidrate Spark, you can connect with them on the app and compete to see who can drink the most water.

How to Drink More Water If You are on a Budget

If you are looking for an easy way to start drinking water without spending a dime, download the app Daily Water. It’s pretty simple. Every time you drink a glass of water, indicate it on the app by clicking a glass. Water bottles count for two glasses. You can also play around in the settings to have the default drink size be half a glass if you are a slower drinker.

March 9 just happens to be World Kidney Day. In honor of this holiday, the National Kidney Foundation is encouraging you to #HeartYourKidneys. In your city, you may notice a building is lit up orange for this special day – the Empire State Building, the LAX Airport pylons, The PECO Building (Philadelphia), and Boston’s South Station will all be orange, for example.
