In my 30 years on this Earth, there have been three life changing hair moments. The first was when I discovered a straightening iron at the age of 17 at our high school prom fashion show – and have since endured 13 years of heat damage. The second was when I learned freshman year of college what a little mousse and gel can do to get the scrunch look. And the third moment was just last week, when I discovered HASK shampoo and conditioner.
I know (and have tried) a lot about beauty products from my friends but shampoo and conditioner isn’t an area where I really ventured into trying new things. Suave, Pantene, Herbal Essence – those were typically my shampoos of choice (and yes, I sound like a middle-schooler). It wasn’t until we were at a beer garden a few weeks back that my beauty PR friend and my beauty director friend were chatting about how bad some of these brands are for your hair, that I thought “uh oh – maybe this is why my hair is a frizz ball mess that always looks like I stuck my finger in an electrical socket.”
I had the opportunity to give HASK Monoi Coconut Oil products a try and was excited to push over that Costco-sized Pantene bottle and make room for my new products in the shower. While it was shampoo and conditioner, I decided to read the directions before heading into the shower, and noticed that the conditioner should be on your hair for 1-2 minutes before rinsing, so I knew I’d switch up my shower routine – shampoo first, condition, shave, wash my body, and rinse. Perfect.
The smell of these products is fantastic. According to HASK, for thousands of years, Polynesian women have used monoi oil—pure coconut oil infused with Tahitian gardenias—to pamper and protect their hair from the harsh effects of sun, wind and sea. It literally smelled like my honeymoon was put into a bottle, and took me back to the products used in the spa at Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora – and I cannot lie, I secretly may have wanted to put in a dash of rum and drink it, since it smelled like a Pina Colada. The Monoi Coconut Oil Nourishing Shampoo is infused with softening monoi oil, a blend of Tahitian gardenias and coconut oil, to hydrate and strengthen your hair.
After rinsing, I then used the Monoi Coconut Oil Nourishing Conditioner, which had the same ingredients as the shampoo. I rinsed after 2 minutes, and once I combed my hair after the shower, I then used the Monoi Coconut Oil Shine Treatment, which is a lightweight, alcohol-free instantly absorbing oil that can be applied to wet or dry hair to create a beautiful shine with no oily residue. I blew dry, went to to bed, and straightened my hair in the morning before work.
In the days that followed, a few key things happened to my hair:
- My husband called my hair soft for the first time in the nearly 4 years we’ve been together – it doesn’t feel frizzy, but silky
- I can run my fingers through my hair and not be met with any tangles
- The smell immediately after washing my hair lingers – and it’s fantastic
- I do not have to straighten my hair daily – normally, my hair frizzes over night, and I have to straighten it again every morning, but with this shampoo, my hair will still appear straight, even as much as 2 days later
- My hair can still last in between washes! I worried with the oil, my hair would become oily much faster, but since I have really thick hair, I can still go three days between washes
- But the biggest compliment of them all…A FRIEND ASKED WHAT SHAMPOO I WAS USING
This never happens to me. My work bestie went online, and bought the entire collection and then some after seeing the results on my normally awful hair. Which is then when I learned two important things – this brand is free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, gluten, drying alcohol and artificial colors, perfect if you dye your hair. And most importantly, the brand does not cost an arm and a leg – it’s $5.99 a bottle on Ulta.
The brand also offers HASK Monoi Coconut Oil Nourishing Deep Conditioner that is an ultra-restorative treatment, but needs to be left on for 10 minutes. I didn’t try this yet, but when my hair is in need of some help, it’ll definitely be something I turn to.
According to HASK, these products are great for all hair types. Check out their website for the full portfolio!
Disclaimer: I received these products for free in exchange for my review. I clearly love these products – just ask my friend Sarah who made the purchase, or my mother-in-law, who I insisted she used these products when she stayed with us this past weekend.
